EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING SKILL COACHING
AND PERSONALIZED STUDY SKILLS
Who is this for?
- Students who need to learn how to study
- Incoming freshmen who likely haven't needed to study (yet)
- Students at risk of academic probation
- Students currently on academic probation
- Students currently on a required leave who hope to return, but with a safety net
But why?
OK - Your student is either heading to college or already there, and you have WORRIES! You know they don't know how to study. Or take notes. Or write papers.
Maybe you know this because they are dangerously close to academic probation as you read this. Maybe they're already on it. Maybe you just highly suspect that it's going to be a struggle because in high school they routinely took advantage of retaking quizzes and tests for a better grade the second time around.
Perhaps they are/were famous for saying things like:
- Mom, I got this! It's no big deal if I don't do well the first time. I can just retake it.
- I DID study! I looked over my notes like 3 times.
- No one did well. It's totally the teacher's fault.
- I'm sure they'll let me do retakes in college. I'll just get that as an accommodation.
- I tried to take notes, but they went too fast.
- I did take notes! I wrote down everything on the PowerPoint.
- I wrote the paper. It's not my fault that I didn't know how to cite stuff in APA.
- The professor didn't even look at my paper. He just made a comment about it being written in the 1st person and gave me an 'F'.
- Why can't I just use Google to do my research?!
What's included? What will you help them with?
This combination package includes both executive functioning skills coaching and personalized study skills. Students will receive everything in the EF package:
- 1:1 support
- Accountability check-ins
- Grade portal reviews
- Brief parent updates, etc
In addition, they'll benefit from 'behind the scenes' support as they learn to:
- Make personalized study guides based on class content.
- Take good notes during lectures and while completing readings.
- Research and write papers, from start to finish.
- Develop study strategies depending on the exam format: memorization, multiple choice, matching, short-answer, and/or essay
This is all done by example and scaffolded throughout:
STUDY GUIDES:
I might compile the lectures from a unit and put together a study guide for your student to study from for the first exam. Then, for future exams, we will build them together with the goal of eventual independence.
NOTE TAKING:
I listen to a lecture and take notes to show your student what 'good' notes look like. We may experiment with printing PowerPoints beforehand to take notes on directly. Or we may look into an accommodation to record lectures so they can take notes on them later. Again, with the goal of eventual independence.
PAPERS:
I'll walk your student through the writing process, from pre-writing strategies to thesis development, supporting paragraphs, and a works cited page. They'll learn to use time-saving strategies for finding peer-reviewed articles and summarizing readings as they build their confidence and independence.
STUDY STRATEGIES:
Critical thinking plays an important role in determining what strategies will work in different situations. Your student will learn to interact with course material more thoughtfully as they put things in their own words and build systems that work for them.
